Blast From the 90′s! ‘Dumber’ and ‘Pie’ to Return?

I’m not so much a fan of the new style of comedies… a gross-out style which oddly started with some of my favorites like American Pie, but over time devolved into the Judd Apatow raunch fests and somewhat incoherent “The Hangover.”

But at least they were original ideas. As Hollywood does, these days, it looks like the vault has opened and they are resurrecting some of the new classics, with confirmation of American Pie 4 in a reunion movie, and rumors of a new Dumb and Dumber.

Check the links below for the latest info. I’m secretly looking forward to both of these, and hopefully a Super Troopers 2. Even if they will probably end up like American Wedding. As these things tend to be, Dumb and Dumber 2 likely won’t happen, but American Pie Reunion looks to be a go.

Universal, which made and distributed the pop-phenomenon original, is developing a new version with an eye toward resetting the property as a theatrical franchise.

The studio is poised to bring on “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg to script a new take on the franchise, which is being described in the development community as “American Pie 4.”

Dumb and Dumber 2

..Bob Farrelly at the “Hall Pass” junket in Sydney this morning, the filmmaker – one half of the veteran comedy duo known for their ridiculously over-the-top laffers, “There’s Something About Mary” and “Kingpin” – let slip that he and his brother Peter are currently developing their first sequel.

“[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they’ll be able to quote lines from that – lines that I’ve long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel – and that ball is in motion.

A Real American Pie Sequel Coming?

Not wanting to admit too often, but the American Pie 1 and 2 movies are some of my all-time favorite comedies. Perhaps because the characters were the identical age I was when released, so the story was sort of targeted at my generation.

Multiple direct-to-dvd sequels with none of the original cast (save Jim’s dad) have been made and were generally pretty throw away. Apparently the recently done direct-to-DVD American Pie: Book of Love (also with none of the original cast) has been reviewed and done pretty well in sales. I actually put it in my Netflix after seeing a review online.

But what I have secretly wanted is a more satisfying last chapter than American Wedding. (As a side note, the original director Chris Weitz, director/producer of the first two films, most recent work was Twilight New Moon).

Over at Moviehole.net, they are reporting (though this is pretty unlikely) that an actual 4th sequel in theaters with original cast may be in the works because of the popularity of the latest DVD. Since none of the original cast is doing much of anything (besides rehab or jailtime) this may be true.

For what it’s worth, check out the “exclusive”..

- Moviehole can exclusively report that the next “American Pie” film will likely be both a sequel (as opposed to a spin-off) to the original trilogy of films and a theatrical release. Universal are apparently quite happy with both the reaction and returns generated on the latest DTV effort, “American Pie Presents : Book of Love”, so are “seriously considering” reintroducing molested pastries to theaters. No word on whether Jason Biggs would be back as Jim… but don’t see why not; he’s not doing anything else, right?! Watch this Space.

American Pie 4 Not Going Direct to DVD?

I’m embarassed to say that American Pie ranks as one of my favorite movies of all time. This is likely because the storyline took place in 1999 as the characters graduated, the same year I did. I have no excuse for the fact that I’ve seen all the direct-to-dvd sequels that have came since (featuring only Jim’s Dad from the original cast).

Well paint me lucky (I could use some luck these days) but it looks as if a new American Pie theaterical release is in the works, with original characters. I thought part 3, American Wedding, almost killed the series off it was so bad, but perhaps there is hope. Not homemade hope, but the McDonald’s kind.

Check out the story over at Moviehole.net

The first American Pie netted over 235 million dollars, and no one in the cast has amounted to much since, so they may be a bargain. Tara Reid may even work for drugs.
